A multi-million euro regeneration fund has been announced for a number of projects in the west.
A total of €82.8 million will be provided by the Urban Regeneration and Development Fund for projects in Galway city, Castlebar, Oranmore and Roscommon.
Almost half of the funding (€40.3m) will be provided to a transport connectivity project in Galway city. A further €8.6m will be spent on improving public spaces in the city.
Money is also being provided for the installation of a passing railway loop at Oranmore Train Station, to help increase the frequency of commuter services into and out of the city.
Minister for Housing and Local Government Darragh O'Brien said the investment would help provide economic stimulus in the aftermath of the pandemic.
Mayo County Council has been awarded €11m for a number of projects in Castlebar.
These will include the re-purposing of the former Imperial Hotel as an innovation hub. The building, where the Land League was formed by Michael Davitt, has fallen into disrepair in recent years.
A total of €9.2m is being provided for civic facilities, along with cycle and pedestrian routes in Roscommon town.
