A drinking water restriction on Achill Island has been lifted.

Irish Water issued a 'Do Not Consume' notice in early August, after elevated levels of aluminium were detected in the public supply. A number of group water schemes were also impacted by the restrictions.

The utility says that sampling has confirmed that the water is now safe to drink, following a drop in demand after the peak holiday period and a reduction in water temperature before it's treated.

The HSE, Mayo County Council and Irish Water are advising people in the area that they can now drink tap water as normal.
