Gardaí in Galway are investigating the circumstances surrounding an incident on the outskirts of the city last night, during which the N84 was blocked to traffic.

A number of people gathered on a stretch of the main Galway to Castlebar road shortly after 10pm, preventing traffic from moving in either direction around the Carrowbrowne area.

It is understood the demonstrators were objecting to the presence of garda traffic checkpoints in the locality, aimed at preventing the spread of Covid-19.

Garda reinforcements were called to the scene and the protesters ended their blockade at 11pm. No arrests were made.

Regular vehicle checks have been taking place on the N84 for the last week, after concerns about adherence to restrictions on the movement of people and non-essential travel.

Gardaí say they are mounting a number of traffic checks in various locations around the city and county, as part of the ongoing strategy to reduce the spread of Covid-19.
