A number of people have had a lucky escape after a car was struck by a passenger train in Co Mayo this afternoon.
The collision, involving the 1.15pm Westport to Dublin Heuston service, occurred at Kilnageer level crossing, at Breaffy, near Castlebar, shortly after 2pm.
An Iarnród Éireann spokeperson said that two people were in the car at the time, but they were not injured, nor was anyone on the train.
A garda investigation is under way into the incident.
The unmanned level crossing where the incident occurred is regarded as one of the most dangerous in the country, due to the number of serious 'near misses' between trains and road users in recent years.
The crossing is on a frequently used rural road, with a school and crèche nearby.
In 2013, the junction recorded a quarter of all near misses on Irish crossings, out of a total of 24 nationally.
