Army explosives experts have dealt with a suspect device found in a remote part of Co Galway.
The device was discovered by gardaí along with a quantity of ammunition as part of an ongoing intelligence-led operation close to Castledaly in the south of the county.
The arms were uncovered in a remote location on the Slieve Aughty mountains, around five kilometres off the main Gort to Loughrea road.
Detectives located two boxes of ammunition and a pipe containing a suspect device in a section of woodland during the search operation.
The device was made safe by the Army Explosives Ordnance Disposal unit.
It is thought at this stage that the find is linked to dissident republican activity.
Gardaí believe the arms were moved to the area relatively recently and may have been left there for collection and transportation to another location.
Further searches will take place, once the material has been assessed.
