Clifden community celebrates Galway 2020 countdown

Clifden is being set alight this evening in the countdown to the start of Galway 2020 European Capital of Culture.

The town hall in Clifden was buzzing all day with drummers, percussionists and torch holders all wanting to play a role in Galway 2020.

They have been rehearsing for weeks ahead of blazing a trail across towns and villages in Galway in the week ahead.

Then there are the volunteers who have come to Galway to soak up the atmosphere, give of their time and have the experience of a lifetime.

The centre-piece of tonight's event was the ceremonial lighting of the specially commissioned town sphere, designed to reflect the stories and traditions of Clifden.

Native Clifden poet, Brendan Flynn, recited The Clifden Road to the hundreds of people gathered in Market Square.

The Galway 2020 fire tour continues across the county this week. Tomorrow's ceremony take place in An Spideal, then it's Tuam, Ballinasloe, Portumna and Athenry.

Everybody taking part in these events will also perform in what promises to be a spectacular opening ceremony in Galway city next Saturday.
