The National Youth Orchestra has joined young musicians from the west of Ireland to perform a special winter concert at NUIG.

The event forms part of the programme for Galway 2020 European Capital of Culture.

The Orchestra will take part in a joint collaboration with the Symphonic Waves Youth Orchestra as part of their visit.

Symphonic Waves are a new West of Ireland youth orchestra, formed as part of the cultural programme for Galway 2020.

It began as a string orchestra in 2017 and developed into a full symphony orchestra last year.

The concert is a unique orchestral event featuring 160 young musicians from all over Ireland.

It marks the culmination of the annual winter residential course, and was conducted by Gearóid Grant and Professor James Cavanagh, with a full symphonic programme including works by Schubert and Beethoven, and a contemporary arrangement of U2’s 'With Or Without You’.

The orchestras aim to inspire talented young musicians to achieve their full potential and experience the joy of performing on stage.

The National Youth Orchestra will perform again tomorrow evening at the National  Concert Hall in Dublin – before heading back to school.

As part of Galway 2020, a wide ranging arts programme will be staged to coincide with what is one of the largest cultural events in the world.

Organisers say there will be a number of spectacular events in unexpected venues and locations throughout the region on the islands, in remote villages, in fields, mountains and on beaches.
