Galway City Council has unanimously blocked a recommendation to raise the Local Property Tax (LPT) for homeowners across the city.

Local Authorities can vary the basic rate of the LPT by +/- 15%.

A report by the City Manager informed Councillors that every one per cent increase would add a total of €82,000 to the local authority's coffers.

Manager Brendan McGrath recommended an increase of 7.5%, meaning the majority of property owners would see the LPT rise by €19.13 in 2020.

This would have brought in a total of €620,000 in additional income.

But all 18 members voted against the proposal, leaving the rate unchanged next year.

A recent public consultation on the potential impact of any variation of the LPT received no submissions.
