Councillor Mike Cubbard has been elected Mayor of Galway, at the first meeting of the recently elected local authority this evening.

Cllr. Cubbard topped the poll in the Galway City Central Electoral Area in last month’s poll.

It is his first time to serve as the city’s first citizen, on what is his second term on the Council.

The Independent representative took the chain of office following intense backroom negotiations in recent days.

A deal between Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael, Labour and one independent member to rotate the Mayoralty over the next five years failed to hold.

Instead ten of the 18 members have committed to supporting a pact that excludes five Fianna Fáil Councillors and three from Fine Gael.

It means that the position of Mayor will be held by independent members over the next number of years.
