Galway County Council has doubled its funding commitment for events planned during next year's European Capital of Culture designation.
The local authority has approved an additional €2m for Galway 2020.
The company set up to oversee the year long event says the money will "contribute significantly" to the development of a number of large scale projects that will be staged around the county next year.
The Capital of Culture bid made specific reference to a county wide series of activities to mark the cultural output of the west.
The additional funding comes as an extensive drive to secure capital for Galway 2020 continues.
It brings to €25m the total amount assigned to Galway 2020 in State funding.
Galway City Council has pledged €6m, while the Department of Arts and Culture is supplying €15m and Galway County Council's contribution now stands at €4m.
Efforts are underway to generate in the region of €7m in private sector funding.
Galway 2020 envisages the total cost for the Galway Capital of Culture programme will be €39m, a figure reduced from initial costing of €45m in 2016.
As well as financial supports, "in kind" contributions are also being factored into that total.
