A meeting has taken place in Galway between arts organisations and council executives on future plans for the European Capital of Culture project.

In a joint statement, both sides reported progress with a renewal and relaunch of relationships between cultural players and Galway 2020.

Earlier, Galway City Councillor, Michael Crowe, called on the chairperson of the Galway 2020 board to consider her position.

Mr Crowe said that confidence in Aideen McGinley was at an all time low following a series of high profile resignations from the project.

The artists had sought the meeting amid ongoing controversy surrounding the impact of budget cuts, planning delays and communications issues on the future of Galway 2020.

The Druid Theatre company withdrew its flagship production earlier this week due to "loss of time, significant budget cuts and communications issues".

There are concerns now that other arts groups will follow suit.

It was confirmed yesterday that former EU commissioner Máire Geoghegan Quinn had stepped down from the board.

The announcement followed the resignation earlier this week of the chief executive of the Galway Arts Festival, John Crumlish.

Meanwhile, a former Galway 2020 project director, Patricia Philbin, has been appointed as its chief executive to replace Hannah Kiely who resigned earlier this year.

A creative director has not yet been appointed to replace Chris Baldwin who resigned less than a year into his contract.

A number of cultural producers are now in place.

Galway beat off stiff competition in July 2016 to become European Capital of Culture in 2020.
