A primary school on Achill Island has been left with no students after its one remaining pupil was withdrawn.
It was expected that 16 pupils would return to Bullsmouth National School on the island off Co Mayo.
However, when the school reopened after the summer holidays only one pupil turned up.
The other 15 children were withdrawn by their parents for unspecified reasons.
Monsignor John O'Boyle, Director of Primary Education in the Tuam Diocese, confirmed to RTÉ Nuacht that the only pupil who had returned to the school was subsequently withdrawn.
All 16 former pupils have now enrolled in some of the five other national schools on the Island.
The Department of Education has confirmed that talks with the board of management and Bullsmouth National school were continuing.
