A father and son who were killed in a fire in an apartment in Sligo town last year died as a result of inhaling smoke and fire gases, an inquest has found.
34-year-old Sean Harte and his father Christopher, who was 64, were both pronounced dead at Sligo University Hospital after being taken there from an apartment at 25 E Market Street in the early hours of 22 April 2017.
Sligo Coroner's Court was told that gardaí were not bringing any charges in relation to the fire at the apartment complex, but that a prosecution had been initiated by the local authority.
At a recent Sligo District Court sitting Sligo County Council brought a prosecution against the owners of the building and the letting agent in relation to their obligations under the Fire Services Act.
As a result of that, coroner Eamon MacGowan adjourned the inquest until those proceedings have concluded.
The inquest was told there were five apartments in the complex and a number of other people had been taken to safety.
No details were given as to the cause of the fire.
Mr MacGowan said the circumstances were tragic and involved a threat to a large number of people in the residence.
There was no fire in the Harte's apartment but they were overcome by smoke and gases, he said.
