Coláiste Ghobnait secondary school on the island of Inis Oírr is unable to teach all of its subjects through the medium of Irish.
The school, which has a total enrollment of 23 - down from 28 in the last school year - has found it impossible to recruit teachers fluent in Irish to teach its full suite of subjects.
This means it must resort to teaching Home Economics, and Art through English only.
It must also teach Maths through English - particularly serious given it is a core subject.
The situation is made harder when trying to get teachers to commit for an entire school year, given the added difficulties and costs involved in getting to and from the island, and the added expense that this travel incurs.
In the case of one particular subject, it means the students must spend an entire day learning that one subject only.
Coláiste Ghobnait offers ten subjects at Junior Certificate level and eight at Leaving Certificate level.
