Former Fianna Fáil TD Sean Calleary dies aged 86

The death has taken place of former Fianna Fáil TD and minister of state, Sean Calleary.

He was 86-years-old.

Mr Calleary served as a TD for Mayo for 19 years, and was a minister of state at three Government departments.

He served as minister of state at the Department of Public Service from 1979 to 1981, at the Department of Trade, Commerce and Tourism in 1982 and at the Department of Foreign Affairs from 1981 to 1987.

In a statement, Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin paid tribute to Mr Calleary, and said that Ireland had lost one of its greatest public servants.

Mr Martin said: "He served with distinction and honour in the 1980s and early 1990s as Minister of State in the Departments of Labour and Public Service, Industry and Commerce and then Foreign Affairs.

"During his life, Seán made an enormous contribution to his county, his region and his country. He will be greatly missed."

Former taoiseach and TD for Mayo Enda Kenny also paid tribute to Mr Calleary.

He described Mr Calleary as a "fearless defender of Ballina and Mayo", who brought "the quality of strategic thinking to his politics."

Sean Calleary is survived by his wife and four children. His son, Dara Calleary, is the deputy leader of Fianna Fáíl.
