A Mayo man who drowned in Canada last year has been laid to rest in his home village.

David Gavin, from Breaffy, died in a swimming incident in British Colombia last summer.

His body was recovered in recent weeks, after water levels receded at the lake where he had been swimming.

His remains were brought back to Ireland earlier this week.

The 26-year-old gaelic footballer was laid to rest in Breaffy Cemetery this afternoon, following Requiem Mass in the Church of the Holy Rosary, Castlebar.

Last June, Mr Gavin had been diving in a river in the Beaver Creek area, around 260km west of Calgary, when he failed to surface.

Extensive searches in the immediate aftermath of the accident failed to locate him.

Last month his body was found by the Calgary Canine Search Corps, after they managed to pinpoint the spot where the remains were located.

Mr Gavin had moved to Canada shortly before the incident and was involved with the GAA community in Vancouver.

He was well known at home for his involvement with the Breaffy club and Mayo intercounty panels.

An extensive fundraising effort in Co Mayo saw over €100,000 raised in 36 hours to assist in the search effort.

A message from the Gavin family expressing gratitude for the financial support made available by GAA fans which enabled the prolonged search for his remains to come to a satisfactory conclusion was read at last Sunday's championship game between Mayo and Galway in Castlebar.
