Moore Hall,  a large stately home built in the 1790s over looking Lough Carra, has recently been bought by Mayo County Council.

The estate house has a connection with the 1798 rebellion, when French General Humbert landed at Killala with over 1000 troops.

Along with local rebels, the troop managed to take control of much of the county from British solders.

John Moore, of Moore Hall was inaugurated president of the new republic of Connaught, the first president of any kind in Ireland.

But the French and Irish rebels were soon defeated, and John Moore held his presidential title for just a week.

The French ambassador is due to visit Moore Hall in May to attend a community event to mark the 220 anniversary of 'The year of the French', and to honour the rebel president.
