Galway Chamber has expressed concern that delays to the construction of a data centre by Apple may result in a significant loss for the economy of the west of Ireland.

It follows reports that the company is to construct a second data centre in Denmark, after completing one that was announced on the same day that a similar development was proposed for Athenry in Co Galway.

Apple's plans have been delayed by an application for a judicial review into the planning process. A ruling on this matter is expected at the end of the month.

Galway Chamber made a submission to the oral hearing into the proposed Apple development last year, expressing its support for the data centre.

The Chamber's President, Maurice O'Gorman, said in a statement that he was concerned at the possible impact the delay could have for the region.

He said that the development would be a significant boost to the local economy and would help attract similar initiatives in the years ahead.

However, Mr O'Gorman said the pace of the company's progress in Denmark contrasted sharply with its experience in Ireland.

He said the €850 million project had been beset by delays and that this placed hundreds of prospective jobs at risk.
