A Galway business woman has been appointed to lead preparations for the city's 2020 European Capital of Culture events.

Hannah Kiely has been named as the Chief Executive Officer of the company that will oversee the year long celebration.

A former president of Galway Chamber of Commerce, she will start in her new role immediately.

Speaking after her appointment was announced, Ms Kiely said she believed the Capital of Culture would be transformational for the city, the county and the wider western region.

Galway was selected as city to host the annual celebration of culture following an extensive competition process involving Limerick, Dublin and a three-county bid from the southeast last summer.

A creative director for Galway 2020 will be appointed in the coming weeks.
