RTÉ has opened new regional offices in Galway.

The broadcaster has moved to Galway Mayo Institute of Technology, where new television and radio studios have been constructed in recent months.

They replace facilities that had been operational in Galway city centre since the early 1970s.

The new studios were officially opened today by RTÉ Director General Dee Forbes.

She described the investment as a statement of the organisation's intent, ambition and innovation.

Ms Forbes said the company's regional infrastructure was central to its output and its role in reflecting all aspects of Irish life.

Featuring state of the art technology, the studios allow radio and television programmes to have live content around the clock from the west.

The first live broadcast from the studios was this evening, with RTÉ Lyric FM's Classic Drive being broadcast from Galway.

As well as housing RTÉ's regional news and current affairs staff, the premises will be used by Raidió Na Gaeltachta, Nuacht RTÉ and contributors to the other radio, television and online output.

It is the latest in a series of partnerships with Institutes of Technology around the country, which has already seen RTÉ regional offices moving to third level campuses in Waterford, Athlone and Dundalk.
