Scheduled elective surgical procedures have been cancelled at University Hospital Galway due to the number of people awaiting admission.

The hospital's full capacity protocol is in place.

Management said "significant numbers" of patients are waiting to be admitted.

People are being advised not to present for treatment at the Emergency Department, unless absolutely necessary.
