Detectives believe that someone has information on Eddie Fitzmaurice's death

Gardaí have renewed an appeal for information on a murder in Co Sligo almost two decades ago.

Eddie Fitzmaurice was found dead in his house at Bellaghy, Charlestown on 6 May 1998.

The 83-year-old had been assaulted, tied up, gagged and left to die.

It has been established that Mr Fitzmaurice was attacked by intruders sometime after 8pm on Friday 1 May and the early hours of Saturday morning.

Despite an intensive garda investigation, nobody has been charged with what officers have described as a particularly brutal and callous crime.

Detectives today said the investigation remains fully open.

They believe someone has information that could lead to a breakthrough in the case and appealed for anyone with information to come forward.
