IT Sligo, in conjunction with local radio station, Ocean FM, will produce an exit poll for the Sligo-Leitrim constituency in the immediate aftermath of polling on Saturday night.
It will be the first exit poll in the history of elections in the constituency and will be carried out at a large number of polling stations all day on Saturday in the sprawling constituency, which stretches from north Roscommon to south Donegal and includes all of counties Sligo and Leitrim.
Business & Social Science students at IT Sligo will carry out the survey of voters and the information gathered will be collated and analysed by senior lecturers.
The poll will give an indication of likely first preference vote outcomes for each of the 19 candidates, and an indication of voting transfer patterns.
Padraig Harte, lecturer at IT Sligo, said the exit poll was a case of history being created locally.
"I'm delighted to see the Institute involved in such ground-breaking research, in the year of the 50th anniversary of the Institute. Combining the latest innovative IT systems with the expertise of the students and lecturers we are able to give local exit poll information within minutes after stations close," he said.
"This information will be available online and social media giving the people of the constituency and the nation a fully immersive experience of the election process."
