The number of passengers who passed through Dublin Airport in January increased by 14% compared to the same month last year, according to airport operator.

2.48 million people travelled through the two terminal buildings, representing the highest figure ever recorded in the month of January.

It was also the tenth consecutive month that Dublin Airport recorded growth in passenger numbers.

Daa said there were three days in January when passenger levels exceeded 100,000 and it was the first time such figures were recorded on individual days in a January.

The busiest day last was on Sunday, 4 January, when a total of 112,227 passengers went through the airport.

The most popular destinations were London Heathrow, Manchester, Amsterdam, London Gatwick and London Stansted.

Daa said the "sharp increase" once again highlights the huge demand to fly in and out of Dublin Airport.

"The strong year-on-year growth in January shows why the permanent removal of the passenger cap is so important to Dublin Airport, the island’s main gateway, being able to meet this demand," it added in a statement.

Daa said it welcomes the "imminent presentation" of a legislative framework to remove the currently suspended cap, which the Minister for Transport is due to bring to Cabinet for approval soon.

The Managing Director of Dublin Airport said it was "very pleasing" to again see that passenger satisfaction scores remained at consistently high levels during January.

Gary McLean said daa wants to "keep improving standards for passengers and that’s why we’re continuing to roll-out new features, services and improvements in the terminals."

"Work has started on a full overhaul of the retail and duty-free offering in Terminal 1 and the new Ryan’s Bar in Terminal 2, which opened in late December, is already proving a big hit," he added.

Daa is forecasting that February will be another busy month for Dublin Airport.
