Consideration is being given to Ireland hosting a global artificial intelligence summit next year, similar to an event which was held in Paris in February.

The AI Action Summit saw world leaders, tech CEOs and academics gathering to discuss how to safely embrace AI.

The conference highlighted the divisions that exist between the EU and the US when it comes to the regulation of the technology.

The Minister of State with responsibility for AI, Niamh Smyth, has told the Oireachtas Committee on Artificial Intelligence that next year's EU Presidency would provide Ireland with an opportunity to platform the country as a global leader in AI.

"We saw what President Macron did around the AI Summit and I think all of the member states have looked at that and thought it would be wonderful to do, and I think that too," Ms Smyth told the Committee.

"I think it is really important that we work in collaboration with tech companies, and I think they want to work with us in a collaborative way to ensure they are working within the rules based approach," she added.

Ms Smyth said she is working on proposals to present to the Taoiseach on the hosting of an AI summit.

The Minister was also asked about the impact of AI on jobs.

"We have to acknowledge that there will be a certain amount of displacement but I would hope that with the establishment of an AI Observatory, that would give us clear data and analysis to see where this is going, where the jobs are being impacted and how we can mitigate against that," she said.

Speaking ahead of the appearance, Cathaoirleach of the Committee Malcolm Byrne said they looked forward to engaging with the Minister about her plans for Ireland's EU Presidency and how Ireland can lead on AI innovation globally.

Ms Smyth also discussed Ireland's National AI Strategy and how the EU AI Act is being implemented in Ireland.
