A €7m investment has been announced through the US-Ireland programme, which will help fund six research projects in the coming years.

First launched in 2006, the US-Ireland programme is a research and development partnership between the US, Ireland and Northern Ireland that aims to boost collaboration between the three jurisdictions.

Funding for the projects comes from Science Foundation Ireland, the US National Science Foundation, and Northern Ireland's Department for the Economy.

To date €148.4m has been committed through the programme.

Today's investment will allow for the creation of six awards for projects, spanning three to four years.

They include a University of Limerick-linked project on the sustainable collection and management of water; and a project focused on telecommunications that includes UCD-based researchers.

In total the six new projects will fund 11 research positions in Ireland, 10 in Northern Ireland and more than 20 in the US.
