Wholesale telecommunications operator open eir has said the expansion of its high-speed fibre-to-the-home network has now reached almost 1.2 million homes and businesses across the country.

The operator, which is part of the eir group, said it sets a new record for fibre broadband coverage and means that more than 3.2 million people can now benefit from full fibre broadband connectivity.

When the roll out is complete, the gigabit network will be available to 1.9 million homes and businesses, covering 84% of premises in Ireland.

"This achievement reflects our dedication to providing cutting-edge technology and enhancing connectivity for communities across Ireland," said Maeve O'Malley, Managing Director of open eir Wholesale.

"In today's digital age, a full-fibre network is not just about connectivity; it's a cornerstone for Ireland's economic growth," Ms O’Malley added.
