Outgoing Data Protection Commissioner, Helen Dixon, has been appointed as a Commissioner at communications regulator, Comreg.

She will take up her role early next year.

Yesterday, Ms Dixon confirmed that she would be leaving her role at the Data Protection Commission (DPC) in February, when her current term ends.

She has been at the helm of the DPC since September 2014, where she has served two terms.

Minister for the Environment, Climate and Communications, Eamon Ryan, confirmed Ms Dixon's appointment to Comreg, following an open competition run by the Public Appointments Service.

"Helen Dixon will bring considerable national and international experience to this role, particularly in an evolving regulatory and legal framework where telecoms and postal sectors have seen rapidly accelerated digitalisation," Mr Ryan said.

"ComReg is facing into a challenging period and this appointment brings the Commission to its full complement of three Commissioners."

"This will further strengthen the leadership required to stay abreast of major developments in the digital sector, ensure an appropriate regulatory response to challenges and opportunities, and proactively engage with consumers."

Ms Dixon began her career in the IT sector, before becoming a civil servant, acting for a period as the Irish Registrar of Companies.

She also previously held senior roles in the Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation.

In July 2022, the Government announced plans to expand the office of the DPC due to its increased workload by bringing to three the number of commissioners.

Last month, the Department of Justice advertised for the positions of two additional Data Protection Commissioners.
