Meta opens its new headquarters in Dublin

Meta has officially opened its new international headquarters at Ballsbridge in Dublin after what the company described as a 'challenging year'.

The parent of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, has cut around 840 jobs in Ireland with redundancies in November last year and again in May of this year.

It now has more than 2,000 full time employees based at the new Ballsbridge campus as well as at additional sites in Meath, where Meta's data centre is located and Cork, where Reality Labs is based.

Asked about redundancies over the last twelve months, the Head of Meta Ireland, Anne O'Leary told RTE News it had been a challenging year.

"We lost a lot of talented, passionate and capable individuals," Ms O'Leary said.

"I think this is a new phase for Meta in Ireland."

"We are excited about the future, over 3.9 billion people are using our apps every month, it's growing," she added.

Meta was originally planning to occupy additional space at its Ballsbridge base but last year it announced that it was scaling back the plans.

The company said it would not be occupying Fibonacci Square, a development at the site of the former AIB Bankcentre.

Meta had signed a 25-year lease on the property and instructed agents to sublet the blocks.

Last year, Meta started moving staff from its former headquarters at Grand Canal in Dublin 2.

The company described the new campus as bright and busy, and said it is designed to foster strong collaboration.

Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Simon Coveney welcomed the opening of the new base.

"It has been a challenging time for the tech industry but Meta employs over 2,000 people in Ireland across three locations and Ireland has played an important role in the company's growth and success since 2009," Mr Coveney said.

The opening of the Ballsbridge campus follows the release of Meta’s latest results last night which saw the company beat expectations for third-quarter profit and revenue, helped by its cost-cutting measures and a recovery in digital advertising.
