TikTok said its new Dublin data centre is now operational and that the migration of European user data to the centre has begun.

A second data centre in Ireland and a third in Norway are under construction, with the second Irish centre expected to be operational towards the end of next year.

TikTok today gave an update on 'Project Clover', a plan to address concerns about data security.

The Chinese-owned video-sharing app has faced scrutiny over how much access China has to user data.

In April, the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) issued guidance advising Irish Government departments and state agencies against the use of the app on official devices.

The US and UK governments, as well as EU institutions, have also banned the platform on staff devices over cybersecurity fears.

TikTok has described the government bans as misguided and based on misconceptions.

Theo Bertram, TikTok Vice-President for Public Policy in Europe said today that it has spoken with governments to help them understand its platform.

"We will continue to talk to governments, that is part of the next steps of our plan," Mr Bertram said.

"We know it is not enough for us to say 'trust us that we are keeping data secure' and that is why we have brought in a highly trusted third party to provide that independent oversight, to give that reassurance to governments and security teams across the region so they have confidence in what we are saying," he added.

In its update today on 'Project Clover', TikTok said it has engaged cybersecurity company NCC Group as a third-party European security company to independently audit its data controls and protections, monitor data flows, provide independent verification and report any incidents.

"Our objective scrutiny, monitoring and assurance means platform users in Europe and the UK can have confidence in the enhanced data security standards that TikTok is setting, which go above and beyond European regulatory requirements," said Stephen Bailey, Global Director of Privacy at NCC Group.
