Tech company Zendesk is to cut 8% of its global workforce.

It is not yet known how the move will impact Irish-based staff at the customer support software company.

More than 500 people are employed at Zendesk's European headquarters in Dublin.

"We are not disclosing impact by country at this time," a company spokesperson told RTÉ News.

In a message to staff, Zendesk CEO Tom Eggemeier said that from 2020 to 2022, hiring had outpaced business realities.

"Unfortunately, macroeconomic conditions have not improved and we find ourselves in an increasingly competitive marketplace," he said.

"At the same time, our customers are navigating massive shifts in how they do business, including increased pressure to deliver profitable growth and leveraging fast-advancing technology like generative AI.

"To best serve our customers, we have to sharpen our focus and wherever possible, direct our talent and resources to our highest priorities including maturing how we go to market and building new products and capabilities that deliver tremendous value," Mr Eggemeier said.

In November 2022, Zendesk announced a 5% cut to its global workforce.

Tech firms including Twitter, Google, Stripe, Amazon, Intel, Microsoft, HubSpot and Salesforce have all announced cuts to their workforces in Ireland in recent months.

Last week, Facebook parent company Meta said there would be around 490 layoffs at its Irish operation.
It followed 320 job losses at Meta Ireland in November last year.
