Cork based software firm, Poppulo, has begun consultations with staff about cutting its Irish workforce by 21.

The business, which designs corporate communications systems, said the move was in response to the changing economic climate and need to re-evaluate its cost base.

The company is also planning to cut 11 roles in the UK and 53 in the US.

"This is a difficult decision to make, and we are very sorry to have to say goodbye to talented colleagues and friends," said Samantha Bufton, Chief Operating Officer, Poppulo.

"Our focus now is on supporting those people who are leaving us."

Despite the restructuring plans, Ms Bufton said the company is optimistic for the future because there is a need for the products it designs.

"These changes will put us in an even stronger position to take advantage of the opportunities ahead for us, as we continue to deliver for our more than 4,500 customers across the globe," she said.

Two years ago Poppulo merged with Found Winds Interactive, a company based in Denver Colarado.

The company was originally called Newsweaver when it was founded in Cork in 1996 by businessman Andrew O'Shaughnessy.
