It is understood that less than 20 jobs are to be cut from Meta's Irish-based data centre team as part of the social media giant's latest round of layoffs.

In March, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, announced plans to cut around 10,000 jobs globally.

Announcing the cuts at the time, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said that the layoffs would impact members of the recruitment division immediately with cuts to follow in late April for Meta's tech groups and in late May for the company's business groups.

Last month's recruitment division layoffs resulted in around 50 job losses in Ireland and today's tech groups announcement is expected to result in less than 20 job losses here.

It is feared that the number of Irish-based staff impacted by next month's business group redundancies could be higher.

In November last year, Meta announced 11,000 job losses globally which resulted in more than 300 job cuts in Ireland.

The company now employs around 2,600 people here.

Tech companies including Google, Twitter, Stripe, Amazon, Intel, Microsoft, HubSpot and Salesforce have all announced cuts to their workforces in Ireland in recent months.

The Government and State agencies have insisted that the technology industry remains strong in Ireland and that there continues to be opportunities both in tech and in other sectors of the economy.
