Users of the Three Ireland mobile phone network are to get access to 5G connectivity as standard and without any extra charge.

The benefit will be made available to new customers initially but will be rolled out to existing customers in the coming months.

It makes Three the first operator to offer 5G as standard to all customers.

Currently Vodafone and eir still only offer 5G to customers with 5G-enabled plans.

"At Three, we want to provide our customers with a better-connected life, and we're doing just that by introducing free 5G across all of our mobile plans," said Elaine Carey, chief commercial officer at Three Ireland and Three UK.

"Value is more important than ever to our customers, and over the coming months, all Three Ireland customers will have free access to our 5G network, bringing them a truly richer connectivity experience, whether shopping, studying or gaming."

The 5G access is contingent on Three Ireland customers having a 5G-enabled device.

Customers will receive a text message when 5G has been applied to their account.

Network operators have been rolling out 5G over recent years, promoting it as a faster and more reliable way to consume data driven services on mobile devices.

However, uptake of 5G subscriptions and services has been slow.

The most recent report from communications regulator Comreg shows that in the third quarter of the year, just 796,604 mobile customers in Ireland had a 5G subscription.

In total there are 8.6m mobile subscriptions in Ireland.

Three Ireland has almost 30% of the mobile market excluding mobile broadband and machine to machine, putting it in second place behind Vodafone at 35%.

85% of the population are covered by Three Ireland’s 5G network.
