An Post has reported a zero gender pay gap for the second year in a row, becoming the first major employer in Ireland to do so.

However, work is ongoing at the organisation to improve gender representation.

New regulations mean gender pay gaps will be revealed over December, many for the first time.

The Gender Pay Gap Information Act 2021 came into operation in May this year, and it requires businesses with more than 250 employees to report on how they pay men and women.

Businesses were required to choose a 'snapshot' date of their employees in June this year and then report on the hourly gender pay gap for those employees on the same date in December.

An Post, which took its 'snapshot' on June 3, reported a negative mean, or average, gender pay gap of 0.86 per cent, meaning women who work for An Post earn slightly more than male employees.

An Post has also closed its median hourly gender pay gap from 3.75% to 0.49%, which mean means that a woman at the midpoint of all female hourly wages is paid 0.49% less than a man at the midpoint of all male hourly wages.

An Post employs more than 9,000 employees, and the majority of them are men.

The organisation highlighted the 50:50 balance on its management board and an increase in female representation in its senior management group from 34% to 41%.

However, just 13% of postal sorting, collection and delivery operations staff are female. An Post said it will redesign its recruitment process to make it more diverse including targeted advertising campaigns.

Anna McHugh, Head of Corporate Communications at An Post, said there has been a lot of work across the business to improve gender representation and she acknowledged that there is still some way to go at the level of postal operatives and delivery staff.

"If you've never seen a post woman in your area, you may not even consider going for a job," she said."And recruitment for postal delivery staff tends to be as people retire so it's piecemeal around the country. There's a big drive now to show the benefits of the role and you can make great career progression though the company if you come in as a sorter or as a delivery person."
