Wing, the drone delivery company operated by Google's parent Alphabet, is to conduct trials in Lusk in Co Dublin in the coming weeks.

The company says it will launch a small-scale demonstration of a drone delivery operation in the area.

"We've already had preliminary discussions with local leaders, but we look forward to much deeper consultation over the coming days," Margaret Nagle, Head of Policy, Regulatory and Community Affairs at Wing wrote in a blog post.

Wing said it will be hosting a public community meeting at Lusk Community Cultural Centre on Thursday 27 October.

"We invite anyone who would like to learn more to stop by, ask questions and get a chance to see our drones up close before they’re flying," wrote Ms Nagle.

"This will be the first of many outreach events leading up to our service launch in Lusk," she added.

In the blog post, Wing described Ireland as a welcome home for drone technology in Europe.

"The goal of this program is to expand our European operations into Ireland, gain experience operating there, and begin the process of learning from the local community about the types of drone delivery services that would bring them the most value," Wing said.

The company described the demonstration in Lusk as "a first small step for Wing in Ireland".

It added that it will look different from the commercial services it now operates in Finland, Australia and the US.

Started in 2012, Wing is a spinout from X, the research and innovation lab that is part of Alphabet, which aims to create "moonshot-based" businesses.

It has already carried out over 300,000 commercial deliveries in ten locations across three continents.

It is also developing a series of aircraft designed to handle a variety of different delivery payloads.

The company is currently using its technology to offer an on-demand delivery service in Australia, Finland and the US.

The arrival of Wing comes amid the growth of Irish drone delivery company Manna.

It has conducted 100,000 flights in Ireland and has offers delivery services in Galway and Dublin.
