Forestry management software developer, Treemetrics, has signed a €1.2m contract with the European Space Agency.

The deal will see the company use satellite imaging, data analytics and its forest measurement technology to provide more accurate forest carbon credit estimates.

The business said the development will lead to it assisting with building greater trust and transparency in the rapidly growing forest carbon credit market.

"The measurement and management of forests will be a key factor in the global community's efforts to tackle the effects of climate change and to live and operate sustainably," said Enda Keane, CEO of Treemetrics.

"It is essential that we accurately measure and harness one of our greatest natural resources, forests, and this is what Treemetrics has been working on since its foundation."

Last year the global demand for forest carbon credits quadrupled.

In June, the Cork based company revealed its forest management software platform would use European Space Agency technology to bring greater transparency to forestry certification.

Founded in 2005 by Enda Keane and Garret Mullooly, Treemetrics software is used over 40 countries.
