Vodafone Ireland has announced that Amanda Nelson is to become its new chief executive.

She will replace Anne O'Leary who steps down from the role next month after nine years in charge.

Ms O'Leary is to join Facebook parent, Meta, where she will take on the position of Vice-President of the Mid-Market Business division for the Europe, Middle-East and Africa (EMEA) region.

Born in England, Amanda Nelson has been with Vodafone for more than 25 years.

She initially worked with Vodafone Japan, before transferring to lead operations in the Netherlands.

Ms Nelson later worked for the company in Malta and then moved to Hungary where she has been CEO and chair for the last four years.

"I am delighted to be joining Vodafone Ireland at an exciting and pivotal time for the company as we continue to expand our connectivity and digital services portfolio during a period of profound transformation for business and society," she said.

"As one of Ireland's single biggest investors in new technology in the telecoms industry, I look forward to building on the growth trajectory at Vodafone and to further establish its position as a leader in digital innovation."

Ms Nelson joins at a time of significant competition and change in the Irish telecoms market, as mobile operators continue to rollout 5G networks and high speed broadband providers grow their fibre networks and vie for new customers.

Vodafone currently has 2.3 million customers and employs over 2,000 people directly and indirectly in Ireland.
