A class action privacy lawsuit has been filed against technology giant Oracle.

Dr Johnny Ryan, a senior fellow of the Irish Council for Civil Liberties (ICCL), is one of the lead plaintiffs in the lawsuit which has been filed in the US District Court for the Northern District of California.

The complaint against Oracle alleges violations of various US privacy and competition laws.

"Oracle has violated the privacy of billions of people across the globe," Dr Ryan said.

"We are taking this action to stop Oracle's surveillance machine," he added.

In the complaint, Oracle is accused of a "deliberate and purposeful surveillance of the general population".

The lawsuit alleges that in the course of functioning as a worldwide data broker, Oracle has created a network that tracks and records personal information which is then sold to third parties.

A spokesperson for Oracle said the company would not be making any comment on the matter.
