Vodafone Ireland has launched a new online trade-in tool, where customers can receive cash for their smartphones.

Existing Vodafone customers can avail of the initiative though the online tool, while non-Vodafone customers can trade-in their smartphone in-store.

Despite the abundance of recyclable elements in smartphones, Vodafone said less than 15% are recycled or traded in.

It said the new online tool assesses the value of a smartphone through a series of device health checks, including cosmetic damage, touch sensitivity, screen condition and rear camera capabilities.

Customers will then receive a quote for the value of their smartphone on trade in within minutes.

Once the quote is received, customers can opt to trade in their handset by dropping it at a DPD collection point using a free postage label provided by Vodafone.

If the device passes final checks, Vodafone said the customer receives payment directly into their bank account.

If an existing Vodafone customer or new customer wants to trade-in in store, they will be given store credit, which they can use towards the purchase of a new phone or accessories.

"Almost 5 million smartphones in Ireland can be repurposed or recycled to help the planet," said Anita Carra, Consumer Business Director at Vodafone Ireland.

"Vodafone Ireland is committed to reducing the impact of electronic waste and we have broadened our service offering in recent years to allow customers keep their devices for longer through repair and insurance products and services.

"This new offer ultimately extends the life of mobile devices, reduces waste and encourages Irish consumers to embrace a circular green economy," she added.
