Mobile network Three Ireland grew its market share here by a fifth to 39.8% of the total market last year, according to its latest results.

However, despite the growth, the firm registered a fall in earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation of 4% to €188m.

The drop was attributable to a decrease in roaming income due to Covid-19 travel restrictions, as well as higher regulatory costs and operating expenses.

In total the company now has 3.1m users in Ireland, an increase of 500,000 over the course of 2021.

Capital expenditure last year hit €114m.

€86m of that was spent on its network bringing the total amount the company committed to its network since 2015 to €628 million.

"One of Three Ireland's main priorities is investing €100 million annually into our network to ensure a reliable service for our customers," said Robert Finnegan, CEO of Three Ireland.

"With this commitment, we have significantly increased our coverage around Ireland, with nearly one million homes now connected with 5G broadband."

One year since launch the company said its 5G broadband is now available to more than 900,000 homes across Ireland.
