Trinity College Dublin has said talks about the future of its Science Gallery will continue with the departments of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science (DFHERIS), and Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media (TCAGSM).

Last month's announcement that the gallery was to close was greeted with public outcry and the matter was discussed by the college’s board at a meeting today.

TCD has confirmed that a sharp decline in grants and philanthropic income since 2017, has led to substantial deficits in each of the last four financial years.

It says that by the end of this September the accumulated deficit stood at €1.65m.

Provost Linda Doyle and other Trinity officials met with DFHERIS and TCAGSM officials earlier in the week to discuss the future of the gallery.

The Board was briefed today on the discussions, that are "ongoing", the college said.

It said it "remains committed to the Science Gallery Network and intends to consult with members on how best to re-imagine Science Gallery Dublin in the future".
