Vodafone said its first ultrafast 2GB broadband customer in Ireland will be connected this week.

Homes and businesses throughout the country will be able to join them later this month and will be able to use broadband speeds of 2,000 Mbps, twice as fast as the fastest previously available (1,000 Mbps).

Vodafone said this means faster downloads, faster streaming and faster gaming for its customers.

"Broadband speeds of 2GB will be transformative for homes and businesses around Ireland," Vodafone Ireland's chief executive Anne O'Leary said.

"Whether you have a busy household or are working from home, connecting multiple devices and downloading movies, or a competitive business keen to grow and knowing a fast, reliable internet connection is mission-critical, 2,000 Mbps broadband will enable you to future-proof your smart home or office," the CEO added.

Vodafone Ireland has 2.3 million customers and said it has the largest share of fibre to the premises of any internet service provider in Ireland.
