The Department of Social Protection has issued a warning about scam text messages purporting to be from the Revenue Commissioners.

It said the messages came from an unknown number, and urged recipients to click on a web link in order to claim a payment of €350.

The Department urged customers to keep their banking and financial information safe, and not to click or reply to any link which appeared to be suspicious.

"The Department of Social Protection wishes to make it absolutely clear that we never request Bank account or other financial institution account details from our customers via a text message or on social media," it said.

The Minister for Social Protection Heather Humphreys described the scams as "sophisticated", and warned that customers of the Department should ensure they only use official Departmental websites at all times.

"Anyone who thinks they provided personal information in response to these fraudulent text messages should contact their bank immediately,"  the Minister advised.
