Credit union current account holders can now use the Google Pay and Fitbit Pay contactless services to pay for goods.
The services are available using the debit Mastercard offered through the currentaccount.ie brand by certain credit unions.
"The use of digital wallet payments provides a safer more secure way to pay that removes the need to handle payment cards, touch physical buttons or exchange cash," said Seamus Newcombe, Chief Executive of currentaccount.ie.
"It's the modern way to pay, particularly given the times we live in. And, with the Credit Union Current Account, the good news is contactless payments are free."
The use of contactless payment services, including contactless cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay and Fitbit Pay, has rocketed as a result of the desire of people not to handle cash during the Covid-19 crisis.
Since the start of the pandemic, contactless transactions have jumped to nearly 80% across Europe.
In order to use the services, credit union customers who have the currentaccount.ie debit Mastercard through their current account need to download the app, follow the instructions and submit a one-time passcode to complete the process.
Once set up the customer just holds their phone or Fitbit device close to a payment terminal to complete the transaction.
