The shipment of smartphones around the world declined by 0.5% in 2017, the first annual decline the market has seen since the introduction of what is now known as smartphones.
This is according to the latest figures from International Data Corporation's (IDC) worldwide quarterly mobile phone tracker.
IDC said that smartphone companies shipped a total of 1.46 billion devices in 2017, with nearly all of those phones running either the Android or iOS platforms.
IDC said it expects shipment volumes to return to low single-digit growth in 2018.
It predicted that the overall market will see a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 2.8% between the years from 2017 to 2022 forecast with volumes forecast to reach 1.68 billion units in 2022.
