Facebook Ireland has reported a 59% increase in both revenue and pre-tax profits for 2016 after the company recently announced plans to create hundreds of new jobs here next year.

Facebook said its Irish revenue grew from €7.9 billion in 2015 to €12.6 billion last year, an increase of €4.7 billion.

The company's profit before tax grew from €109.6m to €174.3m - up €64.7m - during the year.

It also said its current tax charge more than doubled from €14.1m in 2015 to €30.4m - an increase of 116%.

"As the home of our international headquarters, Ireland is an important part of Facebook's story and our growth in 2016 demonstrated that," commented Gareth Lambe, head of Facebook Ireland.

The company now employs over 2,000 people here and said it would create up to 800 new jobs in 2018. This would make it the largest Facebook site outside California, Gareth Lambe said.

Facebook is also expanding its Clonee Data Centre in Co Meath.
