Medical devices manufacturer Boston Scientific has announced plans for a €17m investment at its Galway Research and Development facility.

The endoscopy design centre will facilitate collaboration between physicians from around the world and engineers based in Galway.

Together they're working to design and develop medical stents used for gastrointestinal treatments.

The company says this cooperation will speed the time it takes to bring products to market and has described the investment as a significant expression of its commitment to the region.

Boston Scientific has been operating its European Innovation Centre from Galway for the last 20 years.

The company produces over 3 million medical devices per year at its facility in the city and employs over 3,000 people.

The collaborative process between medics and engineers, known as RoadRunner, has already led to the development of specialised stents for the small intestine and the colon.
