Profits grew substantially at Facebook Ireland last year, according to recently filed accounts from the company.

Profit before tax in 2015 rose 850% in comparison to the previous year, from €12.8m to €109.6m.

The company paid €14.1m in tax on that profit, up from €4.7m a year earlier.

As a result, the social network said its effective tax rate here was 12.8% in 2015, in line with the statutory tax rate of 12.5%.

Facebook Ireland's turnover in 2015 rose to €7.9 billion from €4.8 billion a year earlier.

The company said the increase was due to a growth in online advertising revenue from third party customers.

Cost of sales increased to €130m, from €89.9m in 2014, with administrative expenses ballooning by €3 billion to €7.7 billion, due to higher staff numbers as well as royalty, service and other payments to other Facebook companies.

Facebook currently employs 1,500 people in Ireland, a figure which has increased by 200 this year.

It is also in the process of constructing a new data centre in Co Meath, and has opened a virtual reality research office in Cork, following the purchase of InfinLED by Facebook owned Oculus.

Yesterday, the Sunday Business Post reported that the Facebook is on the lookout for another building in Dublin with a capacity of up to 1,000 staff, in a sign that it is considering expanding its European headquarters further.

The company was recently granted a financial payment services licence by the Central Bank, and is expected to begin offering payment services in Europe.

"We are proud that in 2015 we have continued to grow our business and focus on our goal of connecting the world," Gareth Lambe, Head of Facebook in Ireland, said in statement.

"The increase in our revenue is attributable to growth in advertising from the international business community that advertise on our platform," he added.
