Samsung’s Galaxy Note7 exchange programme is under way in Ireland, more than two weeks after the tech giant suspended sales of its latest flagship smartphone amid reports of exploding batteries.
Customers here can begin to exchange their existing device for a new Note7.
Samsung said it “is fully confident that the battery issue has been completely resolved in the replacement Note7 devices that will be available to customers in Ireland from this week".
In addition to the exchange programme, Samsung has introduced new safety measures – including a battery software update for current pre-orders that limits the battery charge to 60%.
The company said: "By actively limiting the ability of the device to charge to full capacity, Samsung aims to reduce the risk of incidents and simultaneously reinforce the message to customers that they should immediately replace their existing device with a new Note7."
According to Samsung, new devices will also "display a 'green' battery icon (previous software version is white) on the device notification bar, the 'Power Off' prompt screen or the Always-On Display can be assured that the device is safe for charging".
A website will also be launched where customers can enter their phone’s IMEI number to see if it needs to be exchanged.
